The Twin SLX conversion is housed in Fiat’s longest Ducato high-roof panel van, which at 6.36m – just an inch or so shy of 21 feet long – allows the inclusion of fixed lengthways single beds, where the original (5.99m) Twin SP offers just a transverse double. Forward of the sleeping area, the SLX interior is laid out much like its shorter sibling, with a simple kitchen in the sliding doorway, bathroom opposite and half-dinette lounge up front. Testament to the quality of this layout, there are an ever growing number of Twin clones out there. The Extra-long Ducato keeps the same wheelbase as its shorter sibling (LWB), so its extra length is had thanks to an extended rear overhang, although it’s still not a big one and barely impacts handling. The lounge is very similar to the one found in countless other motorhomes. There is of course a good reason for this ubiquitous nature, and that’s because the half-dinette lounge-diners are versatile and usually work well. The cab seats swivel easily, the table is wall hung and works well with a swing out extension giving more dining space, allowing three residents to eat in comfort.There’s plenty of light too, four adjustable LED downlighters and a Midi Heki rooflight do a fine job. The kitchen has a 2 burner gas hob, fridge, sink and storage. The centre-van washroom is very clever, with the normal vanity basin and swivel-bowl loo, well serviced by a good countertop. The build quality is fantastic, with nicely moulded window surrounds, right down to the care with which sealant has been applied. The shower tray is mounted under a lid in the aisle, and is then closed off by two tambour doors to create a spacious and innovative shower area. The bedroom is a versatile space and anyone buying this van will do so first and foremost because they want twin beds. Each bed is wide, at least 6ft 3in long and easily approached by a pair of wide, shallow steps. The mattresses are a deep, firm and comfortable. There’s a surface in between for night-time bits and pieces as well as twin pockets in the rear corners. Double bed sleeping is possible, thanks to a gap bridging base-board and a couple of infills that create a giant sleeping space.
